Zeolites are mineral that are formed in volcanic eruptions.  As volcanic ash is spewed into the atmosphere and lava pours into the sea, the combination of lava, ash and salt cause a chemical reaction which form zeolites.

These minerals have a unique cage-like structure (similar to the picture on the right), with pores and channels running through them.  They look a little bit like a honeycomb with pores and chambers.  Zeolites have a negative charge.  Because of the cage like structure and the negative charge, Zeolites have the ability to draw to them and trap heavy metals and other toxic substances that have a positive charge.
